Can a water filter remove lead from older plumbing?

Yes, as long as it's certified for lead reduction. The water leaving the treatment plant is lead-free, and the City of St. John's says none of its watermains contain lead. The risk sits closer to home. According to the City, the National Plumbing Code allowed lead service pipes until 1975 and lead solder until 1986, so plenty of older Mount Pearl houses could still have some in the walls or under the lawn. Look for a filter certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for lead, or an RO unit certified to NSF/ANSI 58. Test your water before the install and again afterward so you know the filter's doing its job.

Why does my tap water smell or taste like chlorine?

Chlorine is what keeps water safe during its long trip through the pipes from the treatment plant to your kitchen. It's harmless at those levels, but some people can't stand the taste. An activated carbon filter certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 takes care of it at a single tap or for the whole house. One thing to check first: if the odour only shows up on the hot side and smells more like rotten eggs than a pool, the problem is likely your water heater, not the water supply. That's a different fix.

Is fluoride added to the water in Mount Pearl?

No. The St. John's Regional Water System, which supplies Mount Pearl, doesn't add fluoride. So if fluoride removal is your main reason for looking at reverse osmosis, you can cross that off the list. RO still earns its spot for people worried about lead from older pipes, disinfection byproducts, or just wanting the best-tasting water possible. Parents of young kids may want to ask their dentist about fluoride, since it isn't coming from the tap here.

How often should I change my water filter?

Most carbon cartridges need replacing about every six months. Reverse osmosis systems have a few stages: the sediment and carbon prefilters usually last 6 to 12 months, while the membrane itself can go two to three years. Your manufacturer's schedule is the final word. Watch for slower flow or the old taste creeping back. Those are signs a cartridge is spent. An easy trick a lot of our Mount Pearl customers use is swapping filters when the clocks change in March and November. Write the date right on the housing with a marker, too.

How long does a water filter installation take?

An under-sink carbon filter or reverse osmosis system usually takes two to three hours. Whole-house systems take longer, often half a day, because we cut into the main line near where water enters the house, and your water will be off for part of that time. Clear some room around the main shutoff before we arrive. In a lot of Mount Pearl homes, that's in a tight corner of the basement or crawlspace, and a little extra space makes for a cleaner job.

What are the differences between single-point and whole-house filters?

The right choice for a water filtration system depends on your home's water quality, your priorities, and your budget. The key differences between single-point (point-of-use) and whole-house (point-of-entry) filters are: Coverage: Whole-house filters are used to treat all of the water that comes into your home, whereas single-point filters treat only the water from a specific faucet or fixture. Purpose: Whole-house filters are a great solution if your home has widespread issues with water quality or if you want to ensure water stays pristine across your home's plumbing system. If your concerns are only about drinking water, then a single-point filter is a great option. Costs and Maintenance: Although whole-house systems are more expensive and complicated to install, they do reduce the number of individual filters you need to maintain. Single-point filters are cheaper and simpler, but you will need multiple for different fixtures.

Do I need a water softener if my Mount Pearl home is on city water?

Probably not. Mount Pearl gets its water from Bay Bulls Big Pond through the St. John's Regional Water System, and surface water on the Avalon tends to be naturally soft. Hard water scale is a much bigger headache in parts of Ontario and the Prairies than it is here. Softeners make more sense for homes on private wells outside the serviced area. If you're seeing white spots on glassware or crust on your faucets, have the water tested first. Sometimes the cause turns out to be something else entirely, and there's no point paying for a softener you don't need.
