Each type of pump comes with advantages. Here are the two most popular pumps for Calgary residents.
- Submersible Sump Pumps: These are the most common types of pumps in Calgary. Submersible pumps are easy to install, stay underwater most of the time, and don’t clog often. However, they do have shorter lifespans than pedestal pumps.
- Pedestal Sump Pumps: With a separate motor and pump, pedestal pumps sit above and below the sump pit. The motor will sit on top of the pedestal above the pit, while the pump itself will be inside the pit. These types of pumps are noisier than submersible models.
Backup Power Options
Power outages happen for many different reasons. Whether a crane struck the power line outside of your home or extreme weather has damaged a line, accidents happen, and it's always a good idea to be protected. In the case of extreme, weather including high volumes of rain or flooding, your sump pump will be your home's greatest ally. But without electricity, it won't be able to pump the water away. Thankfully, backup pumps exist in two different formats.
- Water-powered: The water pressure of the incoming volume will trigger the pit to empty. As the float switch is activated, water will be pushed through an ejector unit and out of the pit.
- Battery-powered: When your pump registers no electric power, it will activate the backup battery to empty the pit.
Switch Systems
The switch is what will trigger your sump pit to empty. It can be activated by water pressure or by a float.
- Pressure Switch: When the pressure from high water levels builds, it will trigger the water pump to activate.
- Float Switch: When the water level rises in the sump basin, the float switch will rise and activate the pump.
