What's a Comfort Height Toilet?

Toilets come in all types of styles and finishes to match your bathroom and preferences. But did you know you can also select toilets based on height? Traditional toilets are 15 inches high. Comfort height toilets (or “right height” toilets) have higher seats than traditional toilets, usually between 17 inches and 19 inches.

Comfort-height toilets are becoming a popular option for many households.

Benefits of Comfort Height Toilets

When the going gets tough, the tough get comfort height toilets.

The taller seat simply makes it easier to sit down and stand up. The higher seat alleviates the discomfort that comes from squatting down and cocking the knees out to the sides. A comfortable height toilet is especially beneficial for taller people, seniors, and anyone with knee or back pain.

Comfort-height toilets are required in handicapped bathrooms and are ADA-compliant.

Drawbacks of Comfort Height Toilets

Comfort-height toilets are not for everyone. Although the elevated seat height sounds luxurious, if you don’t need it, a lower seat height may be the way to go. Some experts argue that a lower stance is best to mimic the “squat” our bodies prefer. High seat heights may cut off circulation to your legs if they don’t touch the ground. Comfort height toilets can also be tricky for kids – little boys, especially!

Ask yourself where the toilet will be installed and who will be using it the most. Later down the road, if you want a higher seat, you can keep the existing toilet and install a raised seat.
